Heritage Exploration

This free, one-day program was for 5th grade students and was aligned with the 5th grade Virginia Standards of Learning.

What the students learned:

This was an opportunity for students to learn how Lewis and Clark documented their exploration of the West. Students:

  • Experienced the Lewis and Clark expedition through the use of primary source documents
  • Used maps to gain information about the Lewis and Clark Expedition
  • Explored the qualities and experiences that help make a person successful as a member of a team
  • Wrote a well-constructed paragraph summarizing their experiences and using detailed words
  • Used laptop computers to create and publish a two-page newsletter including digital pictures describing their learning experience on the Farm
  • Used surveying equipment from the 1800s
