Orienteering

This free, one-day program was ideal for middle school and high school students as the SOLs were aligned with those grades. Elementary school student groups were also encouraged to participate.

What campers learned:

This was an opportunity for students to learn about orienteering at Learning Tree Farms. Their orienteering adventures allowed them to experience a variety of terrain. Student learned to:

  • Measure distance by pacing
  • Read maps and use a compass
  • Estimate distances by site and pacing
  • Find compass bearings to determine their exact location
  • Follow compass bearings, read topographical maps and estimate distances to maneuver through pre-determined orienteering courses in the most effective manner
  • Determine the best course from one predefined point to another
  • Work together in small teams to successfully complete the course
  • Discover survival skills focusing on terrain features on the Farm
  • View wildlife, nature, and scenery up close and personal
